Sixth Class

Incredible Edibles Competition.

Mrs. O’ Sullivan’s 5th Class and Ms. Geoghegan’s 6th class entered into this competition. They had to plant 5 fruits and vegetables, and then make some different recipes using them. They then made a scrapbook, which they submitted to the competition, about their great experience.

Activities

Ms. Kenny’s class had great fun designing and constructing schools from old cereal boxes, toilet rolls, newspapers and a lick of paint! The were also busy experimenting in science learning about water pressure.

Ms. Geoghegan’s class looked at the effect oil spills have on our seas, and the damage they can do to our sealife and seashores.

St. Brigid’s Day Crosses

The Friday before St. Brigid’s Day, Ms. Geoghegan’s and Ms. Kenny’s 6th classes made a large number of St Brigid’s crosses to sell on St Brigid’s Day. Every year Ms. Geoghegan’s class undertake this activity and have raised a lot of money for various charities, including Meal-on-Wheels, Last Hope Animal Charity, Barretstown House & the Diabetes Unit in Crumlin Hospital.

This year we decided to send all the money that we earn to Haiti. A terrible earthquake has hit Haiti, people’s homes have been ruined and hundreds of thousands of lives have been lost.

On the 2nd of February Ms. Geoghegan’s class sold St. Brigid’s crosses outside the church for €2 and we raised € 568. No-one took back change and the people of Navan were all very generous towards this worthy cause. Ms. Kenny’s 6th class then sold some more crosses for €1 euro and raised one hundred and €155, bringing the total to € 723.78.

Ms Tobin’s class are currently selling Valentine’s Day picture frames and baskets and this money will also be added to the St Anne’s Haiti Fund.

Our Project on the GAA

In early November Miss.Geoghegan’s 6th class did a project on the GAA. Each pupil got two counties to find out about their Gaelic and hurling teams. We made a list of questions to answer about the counties that we were assigned.

Then, in pairs we were given a topic to research on, these were the topics: History of the GAA, Games involved in GAA, Croke Park, Presidents of the GAA, Hurling and football legends, Handball legends, GAA before 1884 and the commentators of GAA.

We e-mailed Mícheál O’Muircheartaigh some questions hoping he would reply with the answers. Later Mícheál replied with some very interesting and useful answers.

Mr. Leavy went to college with Marc O Sé and he had his phone number and we interviewed him over the phone. We all took turns at asking him questions.

We also interviewed Paul Brady the world champion handballer from Cavan and Caithriona Foley, who plays for the Cork Camogie team, by e-mail.

We are now compiling a scrapbook with the information and waiting on other people to reply. It was great fun and we all learned lots of things like which stadiums are in which county, who won the championships and what it feels like to be an All-Ireland champion.

Newgrange

It all started one sunny day when Pat the Baker was making brown bread. Meanwhile, 6th class were reading about Newgrange in their textbooks. While we were reading our brilliant teacher Ms.Geoghegan had a brainwave. This idea was to do a big project on Newgrange. We were separated into different groups. The 1st group was Donna, Laura, Hannah, Sophie and Luke who had to write about the chambers and how Newgrange was built. The 2nd group was Alex, Jack and Rachel who had to write about the archaeology of Newgrange and the different types of tombs in Ireland. The 3rd group was Charlotte, Chloe, Stephen and Hubert who had to write about how Stone Age people lived. The 4th group was Catriona, Amy, Nadia and Kilian who had to write about the tools and materials used to build Newgrange. Our brains soon filled with lots of knowledge about the great tomb.

While we were working our teacher had another superb brainwave to make a miniature model of Newgrange .We brought in recycled goods to make the model. We started with the bottom of the mound. We then started on the three chambers inside the tomb. During the making of the model Ms. Geoghegan won tickets to go to the winter solstice. The winter solstice is an important event that takes place in Newgrange on the 21st of December, the shortest day of the year. When the sun comes up on the 21st of the December sunlight shines through the window box above the door and lights up the tomb. It is very hard to get into Newgrange on the day of the winter solstice.

After we finished the inside of the tomb they moved to the outside which we decorated with polystyrene bubbles used for packaging. We used these to recreate the quartz stones which were used to decorate the outside of the tomb. The project and the model turned out a great success and our lucky teacher had a great experience in Newgrange on the 22nd of December where the sun shone brightly through the passage of the tomb.

Science Experiments

Ms. Kenny’s class were busy doing experiments with their student teacher. They were investigating the topic of floating and sinking.

Hallelujah Concert 2009

On Saturday the 12th of December, 6th class went to the R.D.S to perform in the Hallelujah concert. All the pupils in 6th class had to be at the school at five to four to catch the bus. Our teachers Ms. Kenny, Ms Geoghegan & Ms. McCluskey were travelling with us. It took an hour and a half to get to Dublin. The bus driver was not sure where he was going and he a wrong turn. We drove past Shelbourne dog track when suddenly we found ourselves stuck under a bridge. There was strange noise as the bus driver tried to reverse out with Ms. Geoghegan directing him. Finally we got out from under the bridge and we made our way to the R.D.S.

When we arrived we were in a hurry to get inside because we could hear music, which indicated that the practice had begun. Because we arrived late, we were placed at the front. When the practice was over, everyone sat down and had their lunch. The show started at 8.15pm. As the parents sat down, we put up our banners so they would be able to find each school and see their kids perform. As we sang our first song our parents began to cheer. Most of the crowd were looking at our school most of the time because we were the only ones there that were dancing to our own creative moves.

The other performers on the night were Urban Strides break dancing group, All Angles classical music singers, V.V Brown and Denniz Ellington and the Billie Barry Kids. We sang lots of songs as a choir and also with the different artists. The show was over before ten pm. When we were gathered up we made our way to the bus and made our way home.

When we got back to the school it was about half past twelve and we waited for our parents to pick us up. When we went to school on Monday we were delighted that we did not have to practice any more songs in relation to the Hallelujah Concert. Everyone had some good laughs and really enjoyed himself or herself on the night. We would recommend it to anyone.
