Fourth Class

Down at the Vegetable Farm

the farm 1

The afternoon of the 15th May transported Mrs Scully’s 4th Class and the Green Team to a vegetable growing farm in Lismullen. This farm is owned by the Lenihan family for many years. We were greeted by Joe and his son Cathal, who showed us how our cabbages arrive in Tesco. We saw how the seed was planted and the various stages of growth before being transplanted into the field. Some children had the opportunity to use the special planter attached to the tractor for sowing the small plants into the ground. They matured into full cabbages in approximately 5/6 weeks. They were then harvested, put into bags and put on the shelves in Tesco.

The children enjoyed the outdoor experience of vegetable growing. They visited a few fields with various types of cabbages, brussel sprouts and turnips. They also saw the Scare Crow and the tin windmill, to frighten the crows away from eating the young plants. Some of the plants were covered in a fleece type mesh to encourage the plants to grow stronger and at a faster rate. The green netting around the fields was to stop the rabbits eating the plants. The children observed and learned a lot about the “humble cabbage” before we buy them in our local supermarkets.

The children got a head or two of cabbage and some plants to bring home with them. All in all it was a fun afternoon, which was finished off with the sweetness of a rice crispy bun!!
